<span style="font-family: Times;">New England may be experiencing an
old-fashioned, snow-filled winter, but spring is about to burst into bloom at
the <a href="http://www.brattleboromuseum.org/exhibits/upcoming-exhibits/" target="_blank">Brattleboro Museum & Art Center</a> (BMAC) on <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_678652913" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ">Saturday, March 15</span></span>, when “Flora:
A Celebration of Flowers in Contemporary Art” fills four of the museum’s six
galleries with vibrant work by 13 artists. Opening alongside “Flora” are “Out
of the Shadows: Paintings by <b>Jim <span class="il">Giddings</span></b>” and “Water Studies, Brattleboro,” a
site-specific installation by <b>Jennifer Stock</b>. All three new exhibits open to
BMAC members at <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_678652914" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ">11 a.m.</span></span> and to the general public at <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_678652915" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ">2 p.m.</span></span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times;">“Given the incredible beauty and variety of flowers, it is
not surprising to find representations of them by artists working in virtually
every medium,” said BMAC Chief Curator Mara Williams. “The artists chosen for
this exhibit draw freely from established artistic conventions. They find
inspiration in flowers themselves and in a host of generative sources, creating
work that is deeply connected to aesthetic tradition yet uniquely fresh.”</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times;">Those artists include <b>Robert Kushner</b>, whose 18-foot-wide
painting, “Indian Summer – Homage to Bonnard,” anchors the north wall of the
museum’s Wolf Kahn & Emily Mason Gallery, and <b>Bobbi Angell</b>, whose exquisite
botanical illustrations share space in the Ticket Gallery with living orchids
on loan from Brattleboro florist Windham Flowers. <b>Janet Fish</b>’s dazzling painted
bouquets are complemented by <b>Nan Montgomery</b>’s minimalist renderings of lilies.
<b>Anne Morgan Spalter</b>’s kaleidoscopic videos, displayed on large screens and on
small, gem-like objects, create flower-like images from diverse source footage.
<b>Marta Bernbaum</b>’s glass flowers and <b>Floyd Elzinga</b>’s steel leaves and pine cones
add dimension to a visually rich, strikingly colorful exhibit.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Times;">Opening alongside “Flora” is “Out of the Shadows: Paintings
by Jim <span class="il">Giddings</span>.” From 1982 through 2013, <span class="il">Giddings</span> worked as BMAC’s building
manager and art handler, transporting, hanging, and focusing lights on the work
of other artists, while continuing to maintain his own painting studio and
exhibition schedule. “Out of the Shadows” reveals some of the transformations
<span class="il">Giddings</span>’s painting underwent during that time. “For me, painting is a path to
discovery,” says <span class="il">Giddings</span>. “When I begin a painting, I have no idea what will
develop. My ideas change throughout the process; the process changes my ideas.”</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times;">Rounding out the new exhibits is “Water Studies,
Brattleboro,” a site-specific audio-visual installation by New York City–based
artist Jennifer Stock. The work offers an abstracted portrait of Brattleboro
through images of the Connecticut River and its tributary the Whetstone Brook.
Flowing together just north of the museum, their combined topography and energy
define the town. Stock made photographs, often of reflections in the waterways,
and ambient field recordings at sites near the museum, which she assembled,
together with synthesized music, to project an immersive composition that seeks
to convey a unique sense of place.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">The Kingdom. An earthy place of stark realities. In summer an overwhelming riot of green, in winter a bleak hibernal outpost. As a transplant from the Boston area
many years ago, where I rode the trolleys to high school, was nurtured
by museums, galleries, the state university, and the artistic ambience
of a city, I found that here in the Kingdom, by losing that identity, I
also lost the filter of emotional history of my roots as a daughter of
immigrants and shop owners. And so the Kingdom, more than anything else,
was a portal to discovery for me as a painter. I discovered that, in
this wild place that often misses the mark, where upward mobility isn't
always the prize, I understood the place: it is a celebration of "just
enough."</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Art connects us with the world
beyond the senses, and it is with an encounter with nature that artistic
expression often finds its greatest resonanace. To me the landscape is
not just the natural world but human activity that changes and puts its
stamp on it. We are the landscape as well.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">I was influenced by American
Impressionism that flowered on Cape Cod where I made portraits in the
summer in the 70's. Beyond painting the light, I see a composition like a
puzzle, weaving the main idea into elements that fit into one another
and whose pieces eventually fall in place. Color and glazes are ways to
adjust the pieces to fit right. </span><span style="font-size: small;"><b><br />

<b>The Gallery at River Arts</b> is pleased to present "<i>Draughts for Every Passing Game,</i>" current work by <b>Harlan Mack</b>, March 13 - April 25, 2014 at the <b>River Arts Center</b> in Morrisville. <br />
<br />
Harlan Mack’s recent work,"<i> Draughts for Every Passing Game,"</i>
generates an apocalyptic narrative “on the efforts of the Spirit of
Death in the pursuit of a retirement.” The exhibit consists mainly of
drawings on tar paper “that act like paintings” and steel sculptures
“that act like drawings.” Mack has developed an unconventional approach
to mixed media, working primarily with acrylic, gesso and solvents on
tarpaper.<br />
<br />
Harlan Mack is a sculptor and painter from Washington, Vermont. Mack has a studio at the <b>Vermont Studio Center</b>, where he works as the
Sculpture Technician. He graduated in late 2012 from the Masters of
Fine Arts program at <b>Johnson State College</b>, facilitated by the Vermont
Studio Center.<br />

<b>Kelly Holt - "Where"<br />January 9 - March 9, 2014</b><br />
<b>River Arts Center</b><br />
<b>Morrisville, VT</b><br />
<br />
River Arts is pleased to present "Where", a series of mixed media paintings by Kelly Holt, January 9 - March 9, at the River Arts Center in Morrisville. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, January 9, 5:00-7:00 p.m.<br />
<br />
The exhibit "Where" features mixed media work by artist Kelly Holt. Holt uses questions and musings on Paul Gauguin’s painting "Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?" as a reference point for the exhibition. Addressing how turbulence changes direction in a planned path, Holt's work asks the viewer to question "How did I get here?" and "Do we ever know where we are going?" Layering her surfaces on panel with acrylic, oil paint, graphite, oil pastel and patches of Japanese Kozo papers, Holt builds the ground up, rolls over it, and scrapes into the images - leaving traces of history in the process. Drawings question the human form through a lens of construction, proportion and fragmentation.<br />
<br />
Kelly Holt is a Vermont artist currently exhibiting in galleries throughout New England. Holt has been involved in children's art programs, summer camps, and research on the creative process, teaching at the Portland Museum of Art, the Helen Day Art Center, the Vermont Studio Center and River Arts. A native of the Boston area, Holt received her BA from Boston College, studying studio art with a concentration in painting, as well as English Literature. She received her master's degree in Art Education at Johnson State College, where she completed research, thesis and studio work on art and identity.<br />

The artists represent communities that stretch from Chittenden County and the Northeast Kingdom to southern Vermont. Their wide-ranging work is inspired by the natural world; reflections on cyclical tendencies and life cycles; patterns and symmetry in the natural world; reflections on aging; and the history of art and sacred geometry.<br /><br />The show features many styles of printmaking, including monotypes, etchings, collagraphs, and relief prints. Some work includes combinations of various techniques. In addition to framed work for sale, many of the artists will also be offering more affordable prints from limited editions.<br /><br /><b> </b><br />

human, animal, and hybrid creatures, presenting these figures in ways
that suggest migration through time and space. The exhibit offers Moss
and Van Fleet the opportunity to mingle and integrate their work in new
ways to expand on ideas about species loss, resource sharing,
extinction, ethnicity, and the big questions of life and death. Riki
Moss says, “I’m thinking about life forms looping through time, like on a
conveyer belt, gently rearranging. Stop the frame and there we are,
meeting the gaze of the viewer, the person who wants to know, and
raising the question, 'so what is it we’re supposed to be doing with our
time spent together on this strange green planet? '"<br />

Riki Moss's process uses abaca paper and other plant materials to
create hybrid or chimerical creatures with tremendous energy and
movement, while Van Fleet's wood and found object figures are more rigid
and self-contained. "The installation is like a dance party, with each of my wooden creatures finding a
paper partner with which it connected, often in wonderfully evocative
pairings that suggest play, dance, love, and solidarity,"
says Van Fleet.<br />

The sculptors first worked together in 2010, creating and mounting work for the <b><i>On the Planet</i></b> exhibition in Nagoya, Japan in conjunction with UN Conference on Biodiversity (COP10) and in 2012 in <b><i>Mutual Gaze</i></b>,
one of the exhibits in the 2012 Winooski Pop-Up Gallery District. More
recently they each mounted work from their Parade series in June, 2013
in an exhibit organized by Vermont 350.org in Montpelier.</div>

<b>Full House Exhibit</b> features five regional artists and their diverse works.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><b>Peter Lundberg</b> is a world renowned sculptor
exhibiting his work around the world as well as our back yard. His
sculptures are made from metal, stone, and concrete to form "a landscape
of very primitive things, rudimentary elements of life".</li>
<li><b>Skip Martin</b> is rarely an arm’s reach from his
camera bag, ready to capture the fleeting moments, never to be seen
again. He has had a life long appreciation for the astounding beauty
that the natural world creates, capturing its wonders through his lens.</li>
<li><b>Joshua Rome</b> made his way to Japan at the age of 21
and ended up spending three decades studying and creating art. A great
body of his work was done in rural mountains of Japan an hour from
Kyoto, where he captured the landscapes of a society in transition. He
has done over eighty five solo shows both in Japan and across the United
States.</li>
<li><b>Brigitte Rutenberg</b> defines herself as a “paper
quilter”. Drawing on small stamp-sized piece of vellum paper and then
attaching them one by one, collectively fitting together to form into
her intended design.</li>
<li><b>Claemar Walker</b> is a painter who has experimented
with many paint mediums, most recently creating her own pigments from
coffee grounds. This monochromatic medium matched with her vision and
skill provides a bold and soft elegance to her artwork.</li>

<b>Kim Ward</b>, a multimedia artist and Terri Kneen, a photographer combine similar visions through their individualized varied compositions in the exhibit “Shared Landscape.” Kim’s images depict iconic figures and events occupying both inner & outer landscapes. She has included her initial sketches juxtaposed with her completed projects as a glimpse into the inner workings an artist undertakes. <br />

<br />
<b>Alec Frost</b> is a retired architect with a longtime interest in traditional houses and barns. He and his wife have been part-ti<span class="aZo"></span>me residents of Tunbridge for more than forty years. Alec's renovations of old buildings reflect his interest in retaining the integrity of those structures in the course of change and modernization. Alec holds a degree in architecture from Columbia University. He worked for many years in the Hartford, Conn., area as a partner in the firm of Moore and Salsbury, designing institutional buildings such as libraries, hospitals and schools as well as residences. Upon the retirement of his partners he continued in his own firm for many years.<br />
<br />
Alec's early photographic work included portraits particularly of children and landscapes, working mostly in black and white with favorite Leica and Rolleiflex cameras and developing his own film. As he moved to digital cameras he maintained his direct approach, relying on his trained eye. He does not work with programs such as Photoshop. His photos of barns have been included in “Historic Barns of Connecticut,” a registry assembled by the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation as testimony to those structures as farms go out of business and building disappear due to disuse and neglect. In recent years the historical societies of both Tunbridge and Cornwall, Conn., have issued calendars of his photos of houses, barns and bridges.<br />

The surprising fact about the art of <a href="http://www.biklenartphotography.com/" target="_blank"><b>Douglas Biklen</b></a>, is that his serene abstract pictures are
actually photographs. Bold blown up textural details, enhanced by vibrant color,
create Biklen’s distinct style. Mystery surrounds the actual sources of the
subject matter, yet the results are intriguing, with minimalist expertise. “Fields
of Rain”, “Beach Bubbles Under Water”, and “Television Art” are meant to evoke
scenes in the natural world, using the camera to “construct images grounded in
the lines, colors, and distortions of the physical”. His passion for
photography began in his early childhood with an early medium format Kodak
camera. Biklen now leads a diverse life as a filmmaker, producer, director,
college administrator, and art photographer who enjoys the Orwell countryside and Vermont ski mountains.</div>

The <b>2nd Annual Green Mountain Watercolor
Exhibition</b> opens to the public on Sunday, June 30th. Everyone is
invited to view this spectacular new show on exhibit in the Big Red Barn
Gallery at Lareau Farm Inn, home of American Flatbread. The paintings were selected from entries
received from around the country. Three
jurors chose 72 paintings from 37 artists, which show a broad range of styles and techniques that are possible with the watercolor medium. The work runs the gamut from abstract to photo-realism.<br />
<br />
“As curator, I’ve dreamed of bringing a watercolor
exhibition to the Valley for a long time,” said Gary Eckhart, watercolor artist
and President of the <b>Valley Arts Foundation</b>. “This is our first step in a five-year
process to create a nationally recognized show that brings the highest quality
artwork from around the country to the Mad River Valley. This is a good start, with paintings from
Vermont, New York, Illinois and Georgia on display.” The concept of a major exhibition originated
in March 2012 when the Valley Arts Foundation hosted a watercolor show by eight
regional artists at the Festival Gallery. <br />

Watercolor paintings, long considered the lesser medium to
oil paintings are now highly desired by collectors and museums. Refinements in pigments have created a
brilliance and depth in colors that are as striking and permanent as those in
the oil medium. Watercolor is used “to
transform mundane, everyday scenes into beautiful works of art,” says Robert
O’Brien, internationally recognized watercolor artist. Mr. O’Brien’s work emphasizes ordinary images
that are transformed through the interplay of light and shadow. <br />
<br />
<b>Jeanne Carbonetti</b>, from Chester, Vermont is the Juror of
Awards and is internationally recognized as a watercolor artist and author of
six books on painting. Over $1,000 in prize money and merchandise will be
awarded ranging from $100 to $500, including Best of Show, sponsored by the <b>Mad
River Valley Chamber of Commerce</b>. Other
awards include the President’s Award, the Board of Director’s Award, the
Moosewalk Studios and Gallery Award, the Nancy and Jess Mobley Award and the
Big Red Barn Art Show Award. Holbein
Artists Materials has contributed a merchandise award. In addition, visitors to the exhibition will
have the opportunity to vote for their favorite painting for the People’s
Choice Award.<br />
<br />
A new concept for competitive shows, the <b>Green Mountain
Watercolor Exhibition</b> includes a Small Works Show. Participating
artists have been given the opportunity to show an additional, smaller painting
in a side gallery. The paintings are
priced and sized for the beginning collector or for anyone who wishes to own a
beautiful piece of art.<br />
<br />
The Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition would not exist
without the tremendous support of our corporate partner, Lareau Farm, home of
American Flatbread and a generous grant from the Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce
Marketing-Events Fund. <br />
