Solarplate Printing with Sheri Tomek
Friday, January 11, 10 am–4 pm $95 plus $25 materials fee. Beginners to advanced. A solarplate is a light-sensitized, steel-backed polymer used as an alternative to hazardous techniques. It is a simple, safe, and fast approach to etching and relief printing without using grounds, acids, or solvents. It is exposed with UV light and developed with ordinary tap water. We can work on transparencies with opaque materials, or scan and manipulate photographs or artwork, then print on transparencies. Next, the plate is exposed, developed, and printed. We will experiment with a variety of printing techniques. |
Monotype Madness with Lois Beatty
Saturday and Sunday, January 19 and 20, 10 am–4 pm $195 plus $20 materials fee. Beginners to advanced. Monotypes can help dispel the gloom of a northern New England winter. This is a direct and unfussy entrée to printmaking, with special appeal to painters. Loosen up with bright, light colors and a variety of textures. Using multiple, thin, Plexiglas plates, you can try out different color and mark combinations, and experiement with layering your imagery.
Printing with Found Imagery with Rachel Gross
Saturday and Sunday, January 26 and 27, 10 am–4 pm $195 plus $25 materials fee. Beginners to advanced. In this workshop we will explore various “lo-fi” transfer techniques for incorporating found imagery in prints. Techniques to be covered include solvent transfers, paper litho, and transfer etchings. These techniques lend themselves to montage, collage and layering. No experience necessary.
Monotypes for Kids with Patty Castellini
Saturday class: February 23, 10 am–4 pm $95 plus $20 materials fee. Ages 10 to 15. No experience necessary. Monotypes are one-of-a-kind prints that can be a lot of fun! Students will work on Plexiglas plates, rolling and drawing into water-based inks, using stencils, plant material, and other textures. Your imagination is the limit!
Basic Etching with Brian Cohen
Saturday and Sunday, February 9 and 10, 10 am–4 pm $195 plus $20 materials fee. Beginners to advanced. This course will guide students in creating interpretative and expressive artwork in intaglio printmaking. We will review the basic processes of preparing a plate and using acids safely and will explore line work in hard ground, the oldest acid etching technique. We’ll explore the role of line in developing an image, including building up a sense of light from cross-hatching, and repeated marks in the ground. Each plate will be completed in two states, enhancing the image through the application of a second ground. Participants will complete an edition of prints, emphasizing a variety of approaches including selective wiping.
